The football world is mourning the death of Italian legend Sandro Mazzola, who has died at the age of 83. His passing comes on a significant weekend for Inter Milan and San Siro, the stadium that became the backdrop to much of his remarkable career. Saturday, September 19, also marks the 100th anniversary of San Siro’s inauguration. For Mazzola, the stadium was a lifelong home. He spent two decades with Inter from 1957 to 1977, making 566 appearances and scoring 162 goals. Inter was the only club shirt he wore during his professional career.
Mazzola also enjoyed an outstanding international career with Italy. He earned 70 caps and scored 22 goals, helping the national team win the 1968 European Championship. He was also part of Italy’s memorable run to the 1970 World Cup final in Mexico, where they were defeated 4-1 by Brazil after Italy had overcome West Germany 4-3 in an unforgettable semifinal. With Inter, Mazzola won four Serie A titles, two European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. His connection with the club was especially profound. After losing his father, Valentino Mazzola, in the 1949 Superga air disaster when Sandro was just six, Inter effectively became his footballing home.
Following his playing career, Mazzola remained involved in football. He worked as sporting director at Inter under Massimo Moratti and later held the same role at Torino. During his time in management, he was involved in bringing Brazilian superstar Ronaldo to Inter. Mazzola leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of Italy’s most celebrated footballers. His achievements, loyalty to Inter, and contributions to Italian football will ensure his name remains part of the sport’s history.
